THERE IS / THERE ARE

A.      “THERE” JENIS KATA GANTI YANG DIGUNAKAN UNTUK MENUNJUKKAN SESUATU YANG DIKETAHUI ADA. EXAMPLE:  

1.       “A fly is in my soup.”

·         The first sentence is a factual and impersonal. “The fly” is a subject and “soup” is an object.

2.       “There is a fly in my soup!”

·         The second sentences “a fly in my soup” is an object. So “There” is a subject.

3.       The function of “There” is one of kind subject (dummy) to represent that more personal than factual statement.

B.      BERIKUT BENTUK – BENTUK “THERE” DALAM KALIMAT SIMPLE PRESENT

1.       Positive Sentences

a.       There’s a tree in my garden.

b.       There are books on the desk. (‘there are’ doesn’t have abbreviation)

2.       Negative Sentences

a.       There isn’t a computer in my bedroom.

b.       There aren’t any cinemas here.

3.       Interrogative Sentences

a.       Is there a restaurant here? Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t

C.       THE FUCTION OF “THERE IS AND THERE ARE” ARE:

1.       “There is” used for singular noun.

-        There is a book on the table

2.       “There are” used for plural noun.

-        There are two magazines on the desk.

D.      THE USING OF “THERE IS AND THERE ARE” IN CONVERSATION

1.       Tyler: Do you like London?
Michael: Sure, there are lots of restaurants and shops, and there are a lot of beautiful parks and museums as well. I really want to live there.
Tyler: Me too!

2.       Tyler: Hey, this is a great apartment.
Michael: Thanks. There’s a lot of space, and there are some really nice neighbors as well.
Tyler: Are there any stores near here?
Michael: Sure, there is a supermarket near here.
Tyler: You have a great view!
Michael: Right. There’s only one problem.
Tyler: What’s that?
Michael: It’s really expensive!

3.       Tyler: Is there any pizza?
Michael: No we don’t have any, sorry.
Tyler: Well, are there any apples?
Michael: Yes, there’s some in the kitchen. Help yourself.
